This week MEPs will pay tribute to the victims of the Holocaust, elect committee chairs and propose measures against foreign interference in the EU, EU affairs.
International Holocaust Remembrance Day
During a special plenary session on Thursday (27 January), MEPs will pay tribute to the victims of the Holocaust. The event is organized 77 years after the liberation of the Nazi camp Auschwitz. Parliament President Roberta Metsola will open the event and Holocaust survivor Margot Friedländer, 100, will address MEPs.
Election of committee chairs and vice-chairs
After last week’s election of the Parliament’s president, vice presidents and quaestors, MEPs will elect committee chairs and vice-chairs who will coordinate committees’ work for the next two-and-a-half years.
All MEPs take part in parliamentary committees, with each committee following a different policy area. Committees work on legislative proposals, hold talks with EU ministers to agree new European legislation, draw up own initiative reports, organise hearings and scrutinise the work of other EU institutions.
Recommendations to tackle foreign interference
Parliament also has special committees, set up for a limited period of time. Today (25 January), after 18 months of assessing threats to democratic processes in the EU and seeking possible solutions, the special committee on foreign interference and disinformation will adopt its recommendations on how to make the EU more resilient.
Recovery plans
Recovery plans are on the agenda of the economic affairs and employment and social affairs committees on Tuesday as MEPs will discuss coordination and monitoring of the economic and employment policies of EU countries with commissioners Valdis Dombrovskis, Paolo Gentiloni and Nicolas Schmit.
Ukraine
A delegation of MEPs from the foreign affairs committee and the security and defence subcommittee will travel to Ukraine on Sunday in order to gather information on the current security crisis. The Parliament already condemned Russia’s military build-up and called for sanctions in December 2021.
