European Green Deal: EU and Norway to enhance their dialogue and co-operation on climate, energy and industrial transformation

On 23 February, President Ursula von der Leyen received Jonas Gahr Støre (pictured), prime minister of Norway, to discuss EU-Norway cooperation on the green transition, at the start of an afternoon of meetings between the Norwegian Government delegation and the Commission. A joint statementhas been published after their meeting here. Executive Vice President Frans Timmermans also received Jonas Gahr Støre. After a bilateral meeting, they had a broader discussion including also Espen Barth Eide, Minister for Climate and the Environment; Marte Mjøs Persen, Minister for Petroleum and Energy; and Christian Vestre, Minister for Trade and Industry. Frans Timmermans and Jonas Gahr Støre will then chair an industry roundtable on the green partnership. The EU and Norway enjoy a particularly strong relationship as neighbours, partners, and allies, sharing common fundamental values and a common regulatory framework through the European Economic Area (EEA), cooperating to fulfil common climate targets by 2030 and achieve climate neutrality by 2050. Norway participates in several key pieces of climate legislation such as the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). The Fit-for-55 package will amend key EEA wide policy instruments.
