Ukraine wants a large amount of equipment for its nuclear power plants, IAEA says

Ukraine asked the International Atomic Energy Agency to provide a “complete list of equipment” for its nuclear power plants in the conflict with Russia, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated on Saturday.

He stated that this includes radiation measurement devices, protective materials, and power supply systems.

He stated that “we will coordinate the implementation of the assistance that IAEA member states and Ukraine will provide”, including by delivering equipment directly to Ukraine’s nuclear sites.”

“The need is great, and I’m grateful for the substantial support that our Member States have already indicated that they will provide.”

Ukraine currently has 15 operating reactors at its four plants. Seven of these are connected to the grid. Two are at Zaporizhzhia, which is currently controlled and managed by Russia.

Grossi stated that the IAEA had not received remote data transmissions from its monitoring systems at the Chornobyl facility.

Rossi will visit the power plant next week. The Russian forces invaded Ukraine shortly after but fled on March 31. Rossi said that he would give over personal protective equipment and radiation monitoring equipment.
