EU Reporter’s political editor dies in Azerbaijan

EU Reporter sadly announces the death from natural causes this week of its Political Editor Nick Powell, whilst attending the Global Media Forum in Susha, Azerbaijan.

As Political Editor, Nick was a fine journalist whose wide knowledge and international experience placed him right at the top of his profession. Over the last four years at EU Reporter Nick has analysed events and reported on issues not only throughout Europe but as far and wide as Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Bangladesh.

Most recently, Nick led the EU Reporter team in our coverage of the European Parliament election results.

He was liked and respected by all who knew him and worked with him, from Prime Minister, Ministers, and Ambassadors to fellow journalists and technicians.

Prior to joining EU Reporter, in a 33-year career with ITV in the United Kingdom, Nick frequently covered the events of the UK Parliament in Westminster, and set up and led ITV’s coverage of the Welsh Parliament as Head of Politics

When Nick left ITV, the then British Prime Minister Boris Johnson thanked him for his service “to political journalism at a very high level” and for coverage that had been “fair and balanced.”. The PM added that “it has been very important for the people of this country to get pretty close to fair, balanced, and reasonable coverage, and I thank Nick very much for what he’s done.”

I will personally miss Nick greatly. He was a good colleague and a fine friend.

Colin Stevens, Publisher/Editor in Chief.

EU Reporter thanks
