Commissioner Kos travels to Montenegro to take stock of EU accession negotiations

Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos (pictured) is in Montenegro today (17 January). This marks her first mission to the Western Balkans and reaffirms the EU’s reinforced engagement with the region and determination to step up the pace of the accession process.

The commissioner will meet with President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatović; Prime Minister, Milojko Spajić; and Speaker of the Parliament, Andrija Mandic. During her visit, she will deliver a speech to the Parliament and meet with members of the Parliament, including of the opposition. With this visit, the Commissioner is conveying her appreciation towards the great strides made by Montenegro, which is the most advanced country in accession negotiations. She is also bringing a message of encouragement for Montenegro to stay this course and accelerate the work, as enlargement is a merit-based process.

The mission includes visits of EU-funded projects on the ground, meetings with civil society and local and regional authorities in Bar, and a visit of the city of Cetinje. Following the horrific shooting attack in Cetinje where 13 people lost their lives, the Commissioner will be expressing her condolences there on behalf of the Commission.

A press conference with the Montenegrin Prime Minister at 16:00 CET, and the Commissioner’s address before the Parliament at 17:30 CET will be livestreamed on EBS.
