On 14 February, the European Commission launched the first Africa-EU Competition Week. The event will take place online from 14-23 February, and will bring together officials from European institutions, EU member states and African countries, as well as renowned academics and professionals. A wide variety of topics will be covered, including policy developments, experience with the application of all competition instruments, namely cartels, abuses of dominant position, mergers and State. Up to 100 participants from African public sector bodies, including national, regional and African institutions, will participate in the event.
The programme includes live presentations, seminars and panel discussions. With this event, the Commission aims to create a new platform for exchange and dialogue on competition policy and its application with national and regional competition authorities in Africa. The aim is to encourage cooperation in the field of competition and to promote a level playing field, to the benefit of consumers and businesses, both in the EU and in Africa. The launch of this first week of the Africa-EU Competition coincides with the visit of Executive Vice-President Vestager to Nigeria, where she will meet, among others, Adeniyi Adebayo, Nigerian Minister of Commerce and Industry, to discuss the bilateral co–operation on competition policy. This event follows the Commission’s consolidated practice of organizing competition weeks in co-operation with international competition authorities, such as the EU-Asia competition weeks with China, ASEAN, India, South Korea and Japan.
