Following the evolution of the situation between Russia and Ukraine in the past 24 hours, the UEFA president has decided to call an extraordinary meeting of the Executive Committee for Friday 25 February at 10h CET, in order to evaluate the situation and take all necessary decisions. Further communication will be made after the meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee.
The Champions League final is meant to be played on Saturday, 28 May at the Gazprom Stadium in Russia.
British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said in an interview yesterday (23 February) that UEFA should move the Champions League final from Russia and that if an English team gets through, they should boycott the match rather than play in Russia. She added: “I would personally not want to be playing in a match in St Petersburg given what Putin is doing.”
Formula One are also considering cancelling the Russian Grand Prix in September – here is the F1 statement on the Russian GP: “F1 is closely watching the very fluid developments like many others and at this time has no further comment on the race scheduled for September. We will continue to monitor the situation very closely.”
