Ukraine: Why the cartoon Masyanya was banned in Russia

Russian-speaking people love Masyanya, the mischievous, witty heroine of an animated online series. The cartoon’s YouTube channel has more than one million subscribers.

The latest episode on the conflict in Ukraine received both praises and threats. Russian authorities immediately banned the episode and requested that Oleg Kuvaev the cartoon’s creator remove it from his website as it “discredits Russia’s armed forces”.

Oleg Kuvaev, an immigrant from Russia to Israel many years ago, spoke to the BBC. He said that there is no way to joke about the war.
