EU assists with war crimes investigations in Ukraine

The EU will support and facilitate investigations into war crimes committed in Ukraine by Russian troops. International media have reported extensively on the atrocities perpetrated by Russian troops. The Ukrainian authorities are now working to obtain proof of these atrocities and present it to the international community.

Christian Wigand (Commission spokesperson for Justice), stated that “One thing is certain: there cannot be impunity.” “Those responsible for atrocities and war crime in Ukraine must be held accountable. We will do everything we can to achieve this goal.

The Ukrainian Prosecutor General requested that the EU provide investigators for war crime, forensic experts and evidence storage equipment. Secure communications were also provided. Training was also offered to Ukrainian investigators. Already, the Prosecutor General has launched several investigations into allegations of chemical weapons use and bombing civilian targets. The EU has supported the Prosecutor General in his efforts to prove the war crimes committed by the Russian military to the International Court of Justice. He also seeks to hold them responsible.

Already, the Commission sent a request to EU Justice Ministers to increase cooperation and support the Prosecutor General’s requests. Eurojust and Ukraine have already supported a joint investigation team in Kiev to gather evidence in collaboration with the International Criminal Court.
